A fabulous vintage Geobel Hummel Hand Painted figurine called “For Father”, featuring a outlet little German boy with an armful of turnips and a beer stein. He wears a peaked green cap with a feather and traditional German Lederhosen. Each Hummel figurine was hand painted by a highly skilled artist. It bears the TMK3 Trademark, which dates it to between 1960 and 1972.

The MI Hummel no 87 figurine measures 14 cm (5 1/2 in) high. The base diameter is 6 cm (2 3/8 in).

The “For Father” Hummel clearly bears the incised MI Hummel signature on the top of circular base. It also has the incised numbers “87” and “83” and the blue Stylized Bee or Sty-Be mark featuring a bee with sharp angular wings, the wing tips parallel with the top of the V, and W. Germany underneath. Known as the TMK3 trademark.

A highly collectible quality porcelain Hummel For Father figure in excellent vintage condition with no cracks, chips or visible scratches. The figurine is free of crazing. There is a tiny amount of age related crazing on the underside of the base, which can hardly be seen with naked eye. There may be wear consistent with normal use as this is a pre-loved item. Please view photos carefully for condition.

A great gift for a vintage mid century Hummel figurines, particularly as it is in such excellent condition.

Goebel Hummel figurines of children participating in various activities have been popular collectibles for many years. The fascinating history of Hummel figurines begins with a Bavarian nun called Berta Hummel, who, after completing Art School, joined a Convent in Southern Germany in 1931. There she assumed the name of Sister Maria Innocentia and continued her art work, often painting cute rosy cheeked children. Her fellow sisters encouraged her and she soon began selling her work, bringing her to the attention of Franz Goebel, the director of a German ceramic company. Goebel was able to realise the likeness of her children in pottery figurines. Hummel figurines made their first appearance at the Leipzig Trade Fair in 1935 and enjoyed immediate success.

When Sister Hummel agreed this historic contract with Goebel, it was agreed that her signature, her personal stamp of approval – MI Hummel - would appear on every piece. The only exception is if figurines are without bases or do not have enough surface space to display the signature.

Within months, Goebel's company had begun work on more than 40 additional designs. The Nazis brought production to an end and Hummel sadly died from Tuberculosis in 1946. Goebel restarted production of Hummel figurines that same year, and soon the collectibles were back in demand. Geobel always ensured subsequent figurines were of the quality and design that Hummel would have expected. Production of Hummels by Goebel ceased in 2008. The figurines can be dated by the base stamps.
