Handturned Walnut and Maple Burl Keepsake outlet Box

This box is turned from a piece of black walnut (Juglans nigra) and features an inset lid made from big leaf maple (Acer macrophyllum) burl. The burl lid is thin and delicate, and fitted with a diminutive knob made from ebonized hard maple (Acer saccharum). The subtle, dome shape of the lid compliments the overall shape of the box and almost magnifies the burl figure. The bottom of the box, both on the inside and outside, is decorated with a texturing to provide a little surprise when the box is handled or opened. The walnut body outlet of the box has been finished with Danish oil and buffed to a pleasant satin sheen that provides protection while still giving unmistakable feel of wood. In contrast, the top of the lid has been finished with several coats of lacquer and buffed to a high gloss to emphasize the figure and depth of the big leaf maple burl.
