Switzler, Col. W. F. et outlet al. Switzler's Illustrated History of Missouri from 1541 to 1877. C.R. Barns. St. Louis, 1879.
In addition to Switzler's history, the book contains parts on Archaeology by A.J. Conant, Physical Geography by G.C. Swallow, and Material Wealth by R.A. Campbell. C.R. Barns served as editor. William Franklin Switzler was born in Kentucky and emigrated to Missouri in 1826. Switzler [1819-1906], with one brief tenure as head of the federal bureau of statistics, and another as a Union Army provost marshal, was the editor of a number of Missouri papers., He served as a state legislator and ran unsuccessfully for Congress. His History is the work for which he is best known. Having lived through the Civil War years, and widely respected for his photographic memory, he gives an account of the Border Wars and the war in Missouri based on personal knowledge. The result is an extensive and by no means generic account of the western theatre of the war. The volume boasts many of illustrations, some full page, including prehistoric artifacts, Native American mounds and settlements, explorers, the French occupation, universities, agrarian life, cities.
