From the program booklet: Who has never heard of Dorothy and her three companions, the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman and Cowardly Lion? Since its publication in 1900, The Wizard of Oz has become a part of the folklore of childhood. As with so many classic children's books, this American fairy tale began as a series of bedtime stories. One evening while its author L. Frank Baum was entertaining his four sons and their friends with tales of the magic City of Emeralds, one child asked where the story took place. Baum paused a minute, and looking around his living room, he saw his filing cabinet with its drawers labeled "A-G," "H-N," "O-Z." And thus the word “Oz" entered the language as the name of a fabled kingdom over the rainbow.

At first Baum experienced some reluctance from his publisher towards taking his new story. Although he had written a best-selling collection of children's verse called Father Goose: His Book, Baum had some difficulty in convincing his publisher that the fickle public would accept a fairy tale that opened, not once upon a time in the Black Forest of Germany, but today on the great gray Kansas prairie. He and his illustrator, W. W. Denslow, wanted the book to be lavishly decorated with full-color plates and textual drawings printed in two colors that changed according to the landscape of the narrative. Their publisher uneasily agreed to produce the volume if the author and artist paid the printing costs of the color illustrations, but his reluctance was unnecessary. The Wizard of Oz became the best-selling juvenile of its day, and has been estimated that over six million copies have been sold, making it the most successful children's book of the twentieth century.
