A large hand-sized piece consisting of a light-gray cherty matrix stone, first coated on one side with tiny dolomite crystals upon which rest thousands of individual, pointy, glittery, and well-defined golden marcasite crystals. Scattered about, too, are some small yellowish-orange-colored clusters of very uncommon sphalerite crystals. An absolute must view with a hand magnifier! Top-notch piece!
The Rensselaer Quarry was famous for its unique calcite, pyrite, and marcasite specimens. It is now flooded and closed to collectors. Ex Brandt collection. According to Erich Brandt, the specimens with the orangeish sphalerite crystals were only found at one small location at the Rensselaer Quarry, and are quite uncommon!
