Plant Description: EUPHORBIA OBESA
Euphorbia is a large group of succulent and woody plants. Euphorbia obesa, also called baseball plant, forms a ball-like, segmented shape that is adapted to hot, arid climates.

Euphorbia obesa plants are simple to grow and care for, their care is minimal, making it the perfect houseplant for someone who travels a lot. It simply requires heat, light, a well draining soil mix, a container, and minimal water. It makes a perfect container plant by itself or surrounded by other succulents.

A good cactus mix or potting soil amended with grit make excellent mediums for growing a Euphorbia obesa. Add a little gravel to the soil and use an unglazed pot which will promote evaporation of any excess water. Once you have the plant in a location in your home, avoid moving it because this stresses-out the plant and can minimize its health. Overwatering is the most common cause of malaise in the obesa. It is used to only 12 inches of rain per year, so a good deep watering once every few months in winter and once per month in the growing season is more than sufficient.

Growth Rate
Baseball plants have a slow to medium growth rate. It takes at least two years for a new leaf or stem to appear, and the bulb may not produce flowers for another three or four years.

Flowering
Euphorbia obesa plant blooms in the Mid-summer season and produces beautiful yellow flowers.

Watering and Feeding
These succulents, like most succulents and cacti, will die if they are overwatered. Water the plant when the soil completely dries out. Baseball plants require more water in the spring and summer, and much less water during their dormant period in the fall and winter. They do not require regular fertilization as they are adapted to growing in nutrient-deficient soil.

Soil
Baseball plants require coarse, well-draining potting soil to thrive and should be planted in a cactus and succulent potting mix.

Hardiness
This variety of Euphorbia can be grown outdoors in hardiness zones 10a to 11b and has a frost tolerance of 30°F (soil must be dry if it exposed to the cold or sub freezing temps)

Light
To keep its variegated leaf coloration, the Baseball plant requires bright light. The amount of light required is determined by the growing conditions, which can range from full sun to partial shade sun exposure.

Why is Euphorbia obesa unique?
Euphorbia obesa is dioecious, i.e. male and female flowers occur on different plants.
