9 Leo the Lion MGM Studios ™ Logo Brass Shank Buttons, Ars Gratia Artis, Metro Goldwyn Mayer, Old outlet Hollywood, JR Gaunt & Son, Made in England

OFFERED FOR SALE: Lot of 9 Large Vintage Brass Coat Buttons with Leo the Lion, (MGM Studios ™ ). The buttons were manufactured by J.R. Gaunt & Sons Inc, however I'm uncertain of the date. The raised design consists of the MGM logo with a closed mouthed lion, perhaps from the "Jackie the lion" era 1928-1956 and a ribbon with the Latin phrase ARS GRATIA ARTIS, with the drama mask and laurel branches below.

The words trademark and Metro Goldwyn Mayer do not appear on the buttons.

The reverse is stamped J.R. GAUNT & SON INC. NEW YORK and around the shank MADE IN ENGLAND. The buttons have an applied gold tone over copper or some other non-ferromagnetic metal base.

Condition: Fair given their age and use. The finish varies from button to button, several are in good condition with surface scratches and light wear and others are very worn with some of the gold tone missing, especially on the high points of the raised logo and the backs as shown. All of the buttons have surface scratches, the edges show wear, and some have small dings and dents. The backs of several of the buttons have green verdigris and exposed copper with complete gold tone loss as shown outlet. One of the shanks still has a remnant of fabric.

The buttons measure 1 1/8" in diameter and are about 1/8" thick and the shank is 1/4" and together they weigh 1.9 oz.
