The Haslam System of Dresscutting
Illustrated Book of Draftings for Spring and Summer Wear No. 17
Published by Miss G. A. Haslam, Bolton, UK
Undated. Believed to date from c. 1947.
Softback book with paper covers. 16 pages (excluding cover). Illustrated with black and white line drawings and pattern draftings, plus four pages in colour
Dimensions: approx. 8 1/2" x 11" or approx. 21.5 cm x 28 cm
Features 'draftings' for a variety of women's garments, as illustrated - dresses, suits, coats, beach wear
It states that 'the draftings in this book are based on the foundation dress pattern'. Users had to firstly draft a plain foundation and then follow the 'draftings' in this book.
Please note: this publication does NOT include the foundation pattern (as was the case with many of the earlier 'draftings' publications)
If you are not already familiar with the 'Haslam System' (and wish to use this publication for dressmaking as opposed to fashion history purposes) you are advised to undertake some research before purchasing. Haslam pattern 'draftings' needed to be used in conjunction with 'foundation' patterns as well as the Haslam Chart - copies of which are available from several online retailers
A scarce publication. You are purchasing the ORIGINAL book, not a copy
In reasonably good condition overall, with a few flaws. Noticeable area of denting to bottom outer corner throughout. A smaller dent to top edge throughout. A few other small dents here and there. Some wear and tear to cover - scuffing and creasing, a few small stains to front cover, numerous small indentations/handling creases, slight discolouration/fading. Staples have started to rust (although they are still intact) and there is some slight rust transference to the surrounding paper. General age discolouration/tanning. Some corner creasing. But otherwise good. Binding is tight. Internal pages are otherwise clean with no major flaws - no major stains, no tears or annotations. Please see photos for further information. Please note that it had proved difficult to reproduce the colours totally accurately in the photos.
